I laughed, I cried. This was a great book to read as the new year begins.

Thriller? Mystery? I would say no. This book felt pretty boring and the entire time I was just waiting for it to get started, but it never did. The whole thing felt like they were setting the scene for something about to happen… but nothing really happened.

Probably 2 1/2 stars rounded up. This book was just weird. Nine strangers go to a health resort to cleanse, lose weight, deal with tragedies in their lives, and/or just to get away. They are guided through treatment by a charismatic resort director who is fully invested in changing her clients’ lives. As they get to know each other and more about themselves, the days get stranger and the treatment more intense. The book gets a little dark and seems to veer off into left field about 2/3 in. I basically stuck around to see what happens to the characters and if they were truly transformed. Second book I have read by this author that everyone raves about but I haven’t really loved.

2.5 stars.

Far too long. About halfway through I realised I didn’t care at all about any of the characters, their ‘journeys’ or what might happen at the end of the book.

Tedious prose, irritating character details, and a ‘twist’ that fell flat on its face.

Easy to read if you enjoy this sort of thing, but needs to be about 200-300 pages shorter than it is.
