This really is the Medieval version of Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption...
Also, how old was King's daughter? This seems a little mature.

Wow! The narration!
I throughly enjoyed this "fairy tale" when I first read it many years ago. But listening to the audio version and the amazing job done by Bronson Pinchot - just wow! He brought Flagg to life in so many terrifying ways! Amazing!

I really loved this book. It's a simple high fantasy novella but told with that particular kind of canny humanity that King really nails when he is doing his best work.

I had no memory of this! Really enjoyed it though, love the tie-ins with the Dark Tower and the fantasy atmosphere. The copy I got from the library was a 1st (UK) edition with some illustrations and an AMAZING font for the chapter headings etc. This book has inspired me to create a 16bit chiptune dungeon synth project in its honour.

The Eyes of the Dragon is the book that inspired Stephen King to write Misery. It's actually a double bind: some people were expecting horror from King, even though up to this point in his career, he had a pretty diverse output; others, still, may have expected that The Eyes of the Dragon would have more actual fantasy elements.
Instead we have a tale of courtly intrigue and the unbreakable bonds of friendship, a breezy read told in a more conversational register than we're used to, where years fly off the page. The Eyes of the Dragon is fun, ties openly to the events of The Dark Tower, and gives us more insight into the nature of Flagg than we've seen to date.
Worthy, for certain, but not endowed of that special magic.

I was excited to read this one as it's my first time reading it and it has been sitting on my shelf for years! I loved it so much. It was a fast, quick read. I was surprised at all the Easter eggs/tie ins to other king stories. Definitely worth a read.

Written in 1984, The Eyes of the Dragon has layers to it. Two brothers are forced to rule a kingdom after their father is killed. One stays to rule, the other is forced out. But it all plays into the hands of Flagg, the court magician. He's the one who advises the brothers on what to do, especially once their father is killed.
This is a short and long book at the same time. Something that it seems only Stephen King can do. I'm not mad about it, I did enjoy this one, but not as much as I enjoyed Fairytale.
What I liked about this was that it wasn't horror in the traditional sense. Like I'm sure we would all be terrified to find out that we were in charge of a whole kingdom because our father was murdered. But what I didn't like was how familiar this story was. The power struggle is a common trope and granted, had I read this when it first came out (which wasn't possible since I was born in 1997), I would have enjoyed it more. It felt new but familiar.
It was really hard for me to rate this one. 4 stars seemed too high, and 3 stars was too low, even 3.5 was too low to me. So, this is my first 3.75 star read.
