Finally! Get Geary and co into a situation where they are thoroughly outnumbered and allow them to be spanked for once. Also, I do rather like their reaction to evidence that the hypernet gate network is behaving unpredictably. Could it possibly be because in the last book they destroyed part of it? Nope! Aliens must've done it! I highly approve of this reasoning in my space opera.

Having succesfully taken command of the Alliance fleet that has changed considerably since his time (in the first book), and having survived a near-mutiny (in the second book), the Alliance fleet continues to head for home in this, the third installment in Jack Campbell's 'The Lost Fleet' series.

Previously mentioned in the earlier books, the possibility of unknown alien intelligence becomes more pronounced in thsi one, particularly towards the end of the novel. It's becoming increasingly likely that Humans (spilt between the Syndicate Worlds and the Alliance) are not alone, after all ...

The third book in the popular Lost Fleet series doesn't let up on the action but does build on the characters, making them a bit more well-rounded and..."real". Capt John "Black Jack" Geary proves himself once again a master strategist and military tactician in space battles as he struggles to lead his fleet back home. For a while now, stretching back over the last two books and into this one it seemed Captain Geary was winning his battles a little too easily. Despite inferior firepower, he is a master of maneuver (sort of like Stonewall Jackson) and turns those battles into routes. But the road definitely gets rougher as this book unfolds and the stakes have never been higher.

Add to that the internal struggles that Capt Geary must face and the challenges of honorable command over some reluctant ship commanders, makes for an intriguing read. This series reads like one long novel so don't dare read them out of order. Can't wait for the next one.

The action in this series is so good! Not a huge fan of the relationship issues in this third book, but it wasn't bad enough to ruin it for me.

This is the third book in the Lost Fleet military science fiction series. If you like military SF with excellent space battles and brave, unambiguously ethical protagonists, then I highly recommend this series (though you should begin with book one: Dauntless). The space battles are indeed excellent. The hero is sympathetic and unquestionably good. The science fiction content is mostly strong, both the space battles and the backdrop they take place against, with hints of further things brewing in the background as the series progresses. I note that the plot feels contrived to force our hero into difficult situations, and that the factions among his officers lack much nuance. But right now I am in the mood for a hero I can root for in an uncomplicated way -- plus I am loving the space battles -- so I shall be proceeding straight to book four.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

It’s starting to get repetitive and a bit annoying.
