I'm not sure I can explain why I didn't rate it higher, maybe it just to do too much at once? We get reflections about AI consciousness and toxic relationships and femininity all at once. Also here were some in my opinion crucial world building elements that just get a quick mention when they should have been explored
like the fact bit bodies are made from embryos

I enjoyed the first part of this book and the chapter where Annie and Delta escaped together had me feeling hopeful. However, the abuse scenes where a lot, specifically chapter 5. After that I had a hard time finishing this book because it made me feel so icky. I also felt that there was an abuser redemption arc which left me feeling even ickier about this book.

Annie is a femmebot. She comes in three basic presets nanny, cuddle bunny, and Abigail (housekeeper). Doug is human. He owns Annie. A short while ago he decided he wanted an upgrade. Annie is now autodidactic.

She can learn. Doug likes teaching her. But he can't control what she learns....

This book is an interesting look at what it might be like to be in an abusive relationship. It explores the nuance of seeming to be property. It also explores consent. This book will make you squirm, and it should. I only give this two stars because it reads like a first draft, rather than a completed product.

I am speechless after finishing Annie Bot. This is my first 5 star read of the year and WOW I know I made the right choice waiting to give out this rating because this blew the other books I’ve read out of the park. At first this is West World meets Barbie but it goes so much deeper. It ends as a beautiful but devastatingly honest portrait of womanhood and the shackles of the patriarchy. Be sure to check trigger warnings but otherwise this is a must read.

The premise had me interested, but it didn’t really go anywhere. Most of the book was unbearable interactions with a misogynistic man, and a robot-woman who doesn’t have any other choice but to talk and do much more with him. I was hoping for a twisted (maybe vengeful) ending, especially since the rest of the story is already pretty dark.
