I've heard about this manga a lot and had kind of avoided it because it seemed confusing to me and I was honestly a little afraid of it, but wow am I glad I decided to read it.
My Brother's Husband is a such a good story on so many levels: dealing with the loss of a loved one, homophobia (from your community, your family, internalized), LGBTQIA+ rights in Japan, the way families can be made up of all kinds of people, etc.
Kana and Mike's relationship was beautiful and even though she wasn't the one we were really seeing the story through, she was a great bridge to having good and hard conversations, but also making them seem so much easier.
I was crying at the end of this one when Mike taught Kana how to say "see you soon" in English and I do hope that maybe we will get to see that soon someday. But it also ended wonderfully as it is.

I enjoyed the book a lot. the series has had some squicks, and there are some unresolved questions such as what the LGBT youth in the area were dealing with Mike eventually having to go back. Also a lot of pages were montages without words in this volume, so it read quicker. There was a part about 64% in that reminded me of the school to prison pipeline so it took me several days to come back to the book.

At the end of volume one, we saw Yaichi wake in fear after dreaming that Kana, who was all grown up in the dream, was gay. At the beginning of volume two, we see Yaichi work through accepting that he loves Kana unconditionally and doesn’t understand how some parents could abandon their children just because they’re not straight.
We also see Yaichi continue to work through his own homophobia and start seeing the homophobia and discrimination people, who know nothing about Mike other than his sexuality, have shown and just how rude and unnecessary it is.
I love that this series is set during the three weeks Mike visits Japan and how much, from that short trip, Yaichi is able to re-evaluate the way his reaction to his brother coming out when they were younger. Ryoji is no longer alive but that doesn’t mean Yaichi shouldn’t try to understand his brother and the life, and person, that made him happy.

This was so lovely! I want to read more about Mike and Yaichi and Kana. Let's get another volume where they go to visit Mike in Canada! I would definitely read it. I love how we got to Yaichi's growth and learning to accept that he doesn't know what the future holds. This may be only two volumes, but it's definitely worth it!
