An incredible reimagining of the popular Edgar Allen Poe's novella. I love the nonbinary representation as the narrator. It was the perfect amount of spook and unease. Kingfisher sets the moody quick and it carries throughout. I will definitely be reading again!

i’m gonna start by saying that i am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe, and retellings of his work always make me a little scared. But i was really intrigued by this one, mainly because T. Kingfisher has been getting lots of love from people who’s taste I trust. It started off really difficult for me. At 25% i still wasn’t hooked by the story or cared for any of the characters. Some elements felt weirdly out of place (why create an entirely new country for this short novella that’s mainly focus on one particular house?) and the voice of the narrator felt a little off to me. I can’t pinpoint what was wrong with, but it just felt a little forced.
But, this took a turn when the horror part started picking up. The story got alot darker and it gave me a couple creepy image that will linger in my mind for a little while. i’m a sucker for spooky house and gothic tales and that part was definitely satisfying. I also really liked how weird the story got ; fungus and glowing lake and all that.
Overall, enjoyed it, but didn’t blow me away, which is a repetitive feeling when it comes to T. Kingfisher, maybe she’s just not for me?

Never thought fungus could be this entertaining! What a fun read this was. Subtly creepy and also outright gross in places. Loved it.
