Subtly creepy until it becomes incredibly creepy with a main character I love.

where to start…

i thoroughly enjoyed this book! i love that it’s short and sweet… it’s the perfect length and i was not bored

i loved the characters, especially Angus and Ms. Potter! and i felt like everyone had enough relevance… i could connect to all the characters and i particularly enjoyed the trans/non-binary representation that is more subtle but definitely there… the pronouns thing kind of resembles neopronouns and was really interesting to read

the only reason why this isn’t a full 5 star read for me is because i just didn’t find it scary at all… or anything even close for a horror

maybe this is because i love mushrooms? i just felt like most of it was at most mildly unpleasant

that said, i really enjoyed the writing… Kingfisher set up the scenes perfectly and i was deeply immersed in that world

i pictured every single place with detail and felt creeped out by the house and lake as much as the characters

this is a solid read and i think anyone interested will enjoy it

if you don’t like mushrooms or find them particularly disgusting and want a horror that will get to you, this is it!

Now THIS is what I took that Botany exam for. The parts about mycology were my favourite to study and now to read about.
It didn't take much more to get my attention than body horror, fungi, and neopronouns (sort of, because they're from a different language, but when inserted in English I mean)...
...especially if the fungus uses "neopronouns" as well.

The main character was both loving and funny AND a total asshole, but in a way I enjoyed observing. Ka was smart enough to "complete the puzzle" without dragging it out while the reader already had, which is why I consider the foreshadowing to be good (but I understand how someone could find it underwhelming if they expected more of a challenge - although this feels fitting for such a short a book).
I didn't know it was a retelling so I'll be reading the original, but also more from this author for sure!

What moves the dead is a new gothic favorite of mine, a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The fall of the house of Usher’  was nothing less than perfection. A grotesque  horror and a shocking ending that leaves all to wonder what we really know about life,  death ,and our friends.

This is a pretty damn brilliant concept and retelling of Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher.

It sort of provides a logical scientific explanation for the downfall of the Usher siblings and their ancestral home, but while at the same time making it even MORE creepy.

What the author did to fill out the character of the narrator was really interesting, I liked kan a lot.

This was so creepy, especially in the last half, I was so jumpy reading it. It was atmospheric, suspenseful, and grotesque. I also really enjoyed the MC and thought some of the secondary characters were quite quirky and charming
