Katherine Mansfield's works are very hit or miss because she uses a number of symbolisms which, though necessary considering the time period and subject matter, might still put a lot of readers off. Of course, I have only read a few works of her.
All that being said, Bliss was a truly thought-provoking read that left me in nothing short of awe. The deft way she has presented the problems of her era through the character of Bertha without spelling them out is really admirable and enjoyable. Although I struggled with some of the symbols inasmuch as I could not understand what exactly they are supposed to represent, I still loved reading this short story.
The character of Bertha Young as a woman struggling to be herself in a society which wants to put restrictions on her is something almost all of us can relate to and her own inability to understand her desires is, again, something we can find in common.
It was a really interesting little read for me and I would definitely recommend it to others for a short reading.
Rating: 4.3 out of 5
