I can see why this series has such a hold on the Gen-Z crowd. If I had had access to these books when they were being released (I became aware of them when they got big and was a t00-cool-for-school-teen by then), I would have had my brain rewired by them too. This is a fast-paced read, I loved the fact the main character is considered a Bad Kid at school, the dialogue is witty and lovely to read, and I really had a fun time reading it.

Percy Jackson - The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians middle grade series. This book is great, it has adventure, action, and humor! Percy could have sworn that his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him, he survives the ordeal and ends up at a place called Camp Half-Blood. There he learns that he's a demigod, the child of a god, for Percy this explains all the strange things that have happened to him throughout his life. After Percy finds out he's a demigod, the action in the novel kicks it up a notch.
I would give this book 5 stars but there's a bit of fatphobia in here. Whenever a character is mentioned as being fat it's because they're either supposed to be evil or scary or both. It was really off-putting while reading and I couldn't believe I forgot the fatphobia was in there. It's not as blatant as in Harry Potter but it's still there.
This novel is really enjoyable despite the fatphobia. I liked all the action, the twists, and the surprises. This is my third time reading this book and I still had a good time reading this. Overall, this book was a joy to read. I'm giving this 4.5 stars out of 5

Reading this again after so long felt like dipping myself in a bathtub filled with pure serotonin. I read the entire series originally when I was around thirteen (so about eight years ago now) and I remembered absolutely loving it at the time. This series along with The Chronicles of Vladimir Todd and Fang Girl were my jam back in the day, and with the upcoming tv series adaption (along with crushing finals depression) I thought it was time to revisit it. And oh boy. I smiled so much while reading this book, I completely emptied my highlighter and ran out of tabs before I even finished it. This was the perfect companion to my finals studying, and it made me even more excited for the upcoming series.
Since it had been so long I'd also forgotten a lot of the plot points in here, like the gang's side-quest to get Ares' shield and the waterbed emporium. I also loved the subtle foreshadowing and the way Rick writes Percy's character. The only thing I would personally change is the slight fatphobia towards Clarisse, she is the only character who is described as fat and she is frequently called ugly. But other than that, this is an excellent book that I recommend to anyone looking for some serotonin.

Very solid. A kids book with all the trappings done right. Nothing particularly spectacular but a great example of everything fun about a kids adventure book. Characters were brought to life well. Grover was written a little weird sometimes but I chalk that up to him being forced into the comic relief for 12 y/o boys role. I like him fine in general, it’s just sometimes he does stuff that feel more like the story/tone needed him to play a role rather than a natural thing his character would do. But that’s really my only complaint. I really love that Percy and Annabeth are never romantic in this book. Nothing feels forced between them, just a nice arc between two kids with overlapping aspirations who grow to value and trust each other.
