A must-read for police and prison abolitionists and reformers, the authors make it abundantly clear why common "kinder" alternatives to prison are really two steps back for the work of creating a compassionate society. Their argument is straight-forward and very well supported: we should be working to reduce the number of humans who are punished and confined, not expand the prison system using another name.
Graphic: Confinement, Mental illness, Forced institutionalization, Police brutality, and Medical trauma
Moderate: Addiction, Death, Drug use, Rape, Sexual assault, and Sexual violence
Minor: Suicide attempt

Everyone should read this book. It's so thorough and detailed, and also has a long section at the end for what we *can* do. Very very helpful.
