Five things about Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Weber 📚📚📚

1. This book has some bite to it. It’s comparable in tone to Where’d You Go, Bernadette?.
2. Troubled characters I wasn’t sure I was ready for at all, or even wanted to like.
3. But it’s got wit.
4. It’s got insight.
5. It does have heart. It warms on you. I’m not sorry I read it but it was definitely a bit abrasive for my current reading mood and goals.

My seventeenth 2023 Librarian vs Librarian challenge book done and dusted. This year, I requested books that -

- featured family/found family ✔️
- happy endings ✔️
- engaging storytelling ✔️
- a touch of magic/supernatural ❌

This one faired about equal to my anticipations.

Even though the characters were a bit one dimensional and predictable, I actually liked this. It was a nice break from the heavy stuff that I usually read.

I actually kind of loved this book. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is that it needed to be longer and it is very rare that I say that about a book. They did kind of go from the men getting in a punching fight on a cruise to everyone being happy together in 2 chapters though, with very little processing done. I don't know. Maybe sometimes you just gotta punch someone. So this book had a very extended beginning and a very satisfying ending, but it was like the author didn't want to deal with the messy middle. But like I said I really loved it, so it gets 5 stars anyway. Maybe 4.5 stars.
