Not really horror per se, but a gothic, dark, revenge tale set in late 1800's New York. What McDowell does so well in this book is immersing the reader in the setting. I could envision the Black Triangle so well and felt so immersed and intrigued by its own underworld. The prose itself feels dated now, a tad overwritten and kept me at a distance. It was like I was just being told the story instead of really getting to know these characters and why they do what they do. There's also the usual racism you would expect from the novel's time period that doesn't really get challenged.
