Never though I would actually read all the lotr books. Never hated and loved a trilogy like this. Like don't get me wrong these books are PAIN IN THE ASS to read but I grew up with the movies and like the books answer so many questions and the end?? all the things that happens after the destruction of the Ring. Damn you Tolkien you son a bitch, you are good. (but seriously no more songs)

FINALLY finished. It took me so long because whenever I reached a racist or sexist point, I'd stop. I know that Tolkien is a product of his time etc. etc. but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy reading sexist or racist things. But, you know, he's the father of modern fantasy and everything. So I felt I really needed to read Lord of the Rings in order to have a true understanding of the genre. And it was fun! Just a little *ahem* sexist and racist.

"Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till."

I mean, it's Return of the King-of course it's five stars.
It's not perfect. The pacing is strange, there's one female character and she spends most of her time pining after the man, the back half of the book drags and while I get the thematic necessity of the scouring of the shire I can't say I enjoyed it.
But it IS perfect. This is peak positive masculinity--the men are heroic and all the typical fantasy stuff, but so tender. They kiss and show affection to their friends, they cry, and the friends are absolutely ride or die for each other. It's so wonderful. This series deserves its place in literary canon. It's lovely.
