So I've seen Sherrilyn Kenyon's books around and despite my interest I've never picked one up. She publishes a lot so who knows where to even start. But at the library I decided to grab this one to give it a go, the summary sounded interesting. The high seas, an evil powerful captain, a vicious crew and a powerful woman. Plus the added spice of the two leads hating each other, sounds right up my alley.

Its an absolute shame the book didn't deliver. Bait and switch gets me again.

It starts out really good, a tense prologue that really pulled me in and the first few chapters were told from Cameron's point of view. I wish we had gotten more of Cameron it was like the book was setting her up to be the main lead or at least co lead with Devyl. This book is a stand alone set in a bigger universe (I think) so to be sold as a new possibly stand alone series I really wanted to be in the shoes of someone who is new to the universe, like myself. But once her powers are revealed she fades away into the background and Mara takes over as the co lead. I have a feeling the author revealed it to set up future books but had little interest in doing anything with it in this book. Its a shame because Mara just wasn't as interesting as Cameron was. This burning hatred she supposedly has for Devlyn materialized in like one scene and then just disappeared. So she doesn't hate him like the fires of hell? Cause I didn't feel that.

Speaking of that, you can almost feel where the plot shifted from what the summary sold to what it ended up being. Like the author changed midway through but didn't go back to rework the beginning to better flow with the book. Flow was another problem, this book is constantly jumping back and forth between time. It made for a frustrating read because when it happens it breaks up the flow of the book. Its not a bad book, its well written but at the end it felt more like a soapy romance. It also ends on a great chapter, possibly setting up Cameron for the next book as lead but I just can't go for another bait and switch.

I did really enjoy reading this book.
I did feel a little lost at some of the plotpoints and the ending felt a little convoluted, but overall it was written well the characters were great, and the story was really interesting.

While this is also set in the Dark Hunter universe, the story was not anything like it. It was extremely close, and I did not really enjoy myself.

I hated this book... I won’t lie I skipped a lot of it. And I probably missed a whole lot. I liked that it had people from other books but not enough for me to read every word to figure out little secrets about the characters that I actually liked. Idk if I just haven’t noticed this in SK other Book but is there always that much inner monologues that kind of go off on in a different direction? I mean seriously I wanted to punch some people for thinking so damn much

Deadmen Walking

By Sherrilyn Kenyon

Hellchasers ™

Deadman’s Cross ™

Sea Wolves ™

I avoided buying this book because I thought it was a new series or unrelated to the Dark-Hunter series which is technically true. On her website, it isn't listed in the reading order for the Dark-Hunter series. It's listed on its own as #1 in a new series, combining Hellchasers, Deadman's Cross and Sea Wolves.  I knew I would eventually read it but I wanted to wait for a few more books to come out first. I caved when I saw it offered for free from my local online library.

I'm a little freaked out by the review I'm going to give of a book from my favorite paranormal romance author. I usually can't praise her enough but I had a few complaints on this one.

It's as if Sherrilyn Kenyon took every myth from every culture and threw them in this book. I felt I was reading the Odyssey on steroids. Where the Odyssey was from only the Greek mythology or Pantheon, this book had gods and creatures from every legend I can think of. It was also super fast-paced. I was so confused and overwhelmed that I had a hard time understanding what was happening.

I think it helped that I have read the dark Hunter series and I read everything I can get my hands on about gods and myths all over the world but I was still a little lost. I recognized some of the characters from The Dark-Hunter series in this book but there was a whole slew of new characters introduced in this book. I'm not so sure that anyone who has not read the Dark-Hunter series or who is not familiar with certain myths and legends would be able to follow this book.

What I like about the Dark-Hunter series is that everything was introduced to us slowly and built upon everything else in the previous stories so it was easy to keep up--well, not that easy because it was and is a very complicated and complex story and plot line but easier than when everything is dropped in your lap at once like it was here. Too much was thrown at us too fast. I took a lot of notes to try to keep up and remember who everybody was and what they could do with their powers and why they could have their powers but I lost the enjoyment for the story because I was constantly taking notes.

As for the actual storyline, it was excellent as always. Nobody writes like Sherrilyn Kenyon.

It was set in the Caribbean in the 1700s on a pirate ship with a crew of the damned kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact, a lot of this book reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean. A girl named Cameron needs help finding her brother and asks the captain of the ship for help and from there, the quest unfolds.

What the heck is this chaotic mess? Who is the main character? Bane? Devlyn? Dew? Captain? Malakai? Oh wait, apparently they're all the same damn person. The love interest? Definitely Cameron... until about 25% into the book and then it's suddenly entirely someone else. Secondary characters? Too many to count, or name. Time period? There's like, five? Six? All flashed to at various points. All with different character. Seriously, this book is a mess. Oh and conveniently Devlyn/Bane/Captain has all sorts of hidden powers and secrets that makes him ridiculously powerful and his life-connection person of 1000 yrs+ had zero clue of any of it
