I was grabbed by the start of book by the protagonist Yaleen's introduction to the black current, but this was the highlight of the book for me. I was compelled to keep reading because of the fascinating world building, not the writing style, characterization or dialogue which didn't do much for me.

While the attitude of women towards sex with men didn't feel believable, and pulled me out of the book, I've got to give credit for a male author who deals with the issue of having your period while isolated in a strange environment!

I would like to read the rest of the trilogy eventually so I can understand this universe more.

Another trilogy that I've loved since I was a teenager, though these days I detect a touch of the "man writing sexually liberated woman" about it. It's still great though.
