"Hadji Murat" -- Awesome. Definitely worth the read just for the parallel chapters on Nicholas I and Shamil alone.

This follows a Moscow socialite who gets in some bother and leaves town. He winds up living in a Cossack village for a while, where the book is based.

Really enjoyed this. I've only read War and Peace by LT before, and that was a great story dragged down by all the philosophy of history bs. Because this is much shorter, Tolstoy can't go off piste. The characters are all really interesting, and it's a really good, tight plot.
