The Moth Keeper is a story about community, curiosity, responsibility, and loneliness. The parallels between the ghost of legend, losing her ability to enjoy life to her obsession with the moon and Anya's daydreaming about living under the sun are such poignant parallels, especially after Anya's daydreaming about life under the sun while spending her nights alone. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the characters are easy to love!

The art in this graphic novel is beautiful with colors that pop off the page (or screen) even for the many nighttime scenes. Characters are depicted very expressively with distinct emotions playing across their faces.

While fantasy begins the story with the Moon Spirit, I enjoy a sense of belonging and loyalty from Anya and her fellow night villagers. They have faith through living a unique lifestyle that find no one ever truly alone. Night versus day villages shows how limiting ourselves to one viewpoint blocks much knowledge and experiences from life. My favorite part is the inspiration at the end. O'Neill wonderfully and creatively teaches about desert ecosystems and connects that of New Zealand (Aotearoa) and the US Southwest.

A love letter to the desert, to solitude, and to togetherness. Absolutely gorgeous.

"The sadder I felt, the more I believed that only the beauty of the moon would make me happy again..."

This graphic novel hit harder than I thought. It's full of hope without disregarding sadness. It conveys the importance of kindness and community.
It's a really sweet story, very comforting from both the writing and the illustrations. I identified a lot with the main character and that was nice to feel seen in that way.
