I like Maisie, I really do. She quirky, independent and smart. But does everything bad that could possibly happen to a person really have to happen to her? There must be some periods in her life that don't have tragedy but we don't ever get to read about them.
Several parts of this story really didn't work for me, the abrupt way she ended up on Gibraltar for one. We spend several books getting to a point on her life and then just brush past it in a chapter and end up in the middle of a murder mystery. The story of which is not that wonderful, it felt rushed and contrived.
I think this is my least favorite of the series so far.

I have never hidden the fact that I adore Maisie Dobbs and this book is no different. What I didn’t adore was the fact in the first 5% of the book I was almost in tears because so much sadness happened to Maisie and I really, really, really, just want Maisie to be happy. But throughout this book, Maisie does learn to be happy. Or a new version of happy. My heart still hurts of course.

My least favorite of the series so far. It felt disjointed.

Always a fan of Maisie Dobbs, but this one was hard to read. It's about Maisie working through her grief over some previous events in her life and to me, she seemed very alone through the whole thing. Physically, yes, but more emotionally. I did not like that the author skimmed over 4 years of Maisie's life in a handful of pages, years that some huge life events occurred in. The story itself was okay, and I probably would have given it two stars, but she did such a good job walking Maisie through her pain, it gets 3 from me.

I’m sad for Maisie and her losses, but the shift will allow her to grow as a character.
