Riwenne & The Bionic Witches is book two in Kristen S. Walker’s Divine Warriors series. This book picks up where book one left off with Riwenne and her friends on the run. Riwenne is still reeling from several truths that have been dealt to her from Nexita and Minister Rennu. Nexita has turned her back on Riwenne and the rest of the warriors and has sided with Rennu. But the hard hits aren’t done coming for Riwenne. She has lost her connection to the goddess that she revered the most and now she has no magic. Being on the run is taking its toll on the girls, but especially Riwenne. They find themselves alone as the rebels won’t take them in and now they must struggle to find their next path to take in their quest to right a wrong that is hundreds of years overdue.
I love how this book picks up where the first one left off. The pace is slower, but it is a story that is chock full of information as the story continues to come together. We get the back story of what happened between the gods that caused Quilla to be imprisoned. The author introduces a variety of new characters and situations. I have to say that I applaud the author’s representation of LGBTQ and non-binary characters. I appreciate that none of the girls took issue with Vilqa. I was concerned briefly that Riwenne would be resentful of Vilqa but instead they become good friends as Riwenne trains them in their new role. The romance blossoms in this story!!! I was so thrilled! I was afraid for a minute that things would change, but love comes through!
There isn’t much that I don’t like about this book, but I was disappointed in how whiny Riwenne becomes. I understand that she is naïve and that she has lived a sheltered life, but I expected her to come to terms quicker with the facts of the changes in their lives as they are on the run. I also didn’t like how it seemed like the other girls treated her differently with her loss of power.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author does a fantastic job with this book. While this book doesn’t leave you on a huge cliffhanger, it does leave you a bit suspenseful and eager to learn what happens next. Change is coming and I am eager to see where the author takes this story. If you have read the previous book in this series and want to see what happens next…then grab this book! If you haven’t read this series yet, love Sailor Moon, steampunk, magic and like books with LGBTQ representation then this is a good choice to make.
