At first, I thought it to be very slow, and I somewhat felt like nothing was happening but the end saved it all. My friend told me the first book is mainly introductive to the world, which is why it's quite slow. And she told me the 2 other books of this trilogy are even better, so can't wait to dive into them!

You know those really good books that you want to read but you just can't get into them and end up restarting the book about five times? Yeah. But this book is actually genuinely good and beautifully written and sweet and it's about foxes

For a while, it was ever so slightly boring. The vast majority is just setting everything up and sort of in a plain way. That doesn't mean bad, just kinda slow and monotonous.
I loved the characters. Isla is adorable, and she has some great character development for this being just book one. Siffrin is alright. He's got potential. The realizations she has and failures she overcomes are well-written and exciting. There was one major plot twist, but I wouldn't really call it unexpected. I figured it out pretty quickly. Again, that doesn't translate to it being bad, just a bit basic.
One nitpicky thing is that it keeps calling them Canista's Cubs. No canine child is called a cub, and it's a bit frustrating to see it over and over.
Keeping spoilers out is hard, but I'm not a huge fan of what happened to the bad guy. That was kind of a cheap way of dealing with a problem, and we never really got to see much of her anyway. She loosely followed them the whole book, and then they didn't even really solve the problem on their own.
I like the magic system. I'm very excited to see Isla grow into it.
I'm a massive fan of the glossary in the back to refer to. Way more books should have this.

It's a bit confusing due to the book being from the POV of a creature that doesn't know anything because she's still a cub.
