White Lies by Jayne Ann Krentz
Book #2 in The Arcane Society
3 Stars

Synopsis:
Clare Lancaster is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy member of the Arcane Society. She also just happens to be a human lie detector. Jake Salter is a psychic hunter sent by the Society to discover who is searching for the formula that enhances psychic abilities. The two connect immediately and become embroiled in a complex case of greed, murder and revenge.

Review:
The banter between the main characters and the feisty heroine transform a mediocre plot into a great story. The descriptions of Clare's ability are tantalizing and it would have been great to have more about how her skill developed. One other complaint is that the identity of the villain is predictable - I guessed it the minute the character was introduced.

Totally different from the first book in the series. This one is set in the modern day, with members of the now-thriving Arcane Society. A very quick read with an interesting mystery and a little romance.

An enjoyable mix of suspense and romance with psychic abilities tossed into the mix. Jake Salter is undercover in Arizona. When Claire arrives at a cocktail party thrown by her father, and Jake's employer, sparks fly between them. The mystery deepens as several attempts are made on Claire's life and she and Jake investigate what is happening.

Once I actually settled into this book, I finished it very quickly. It really only took me 2 days to read but I started it pretty late at night so it shows as being 3 days here on GR. I liked the two main characters a lot.

This is the second of Jayne Ann Krentz's Arcane Society books. They are an interesting read. Not real deep but they keep my attention well enough I usually read one in a couple days. More than fluff, less that Anita Blake. The main characters as well as the secondaries are all well done and I like her writing style. I'm sure I'll go through them all.

Another fun little read. I'm enjoying this series because the changing characters mean I'll be able to move quickly and do some back-to-back reading without getting my burned out.
