Enjoyable comedy-fantasy. Classic Yahtzee in its construction and themes. Some of the satire is a bit heavy-handed but that's to be expected.

Reread: This audiobook is perfection and everyone who hasn't read it is MISSING OUT

This book was super fun. I picked it up when it was the deal of the day on Audible and listened all through my trip to Atlanta. Starts off with some serious Harry Potter vibes, but takes some quirky turns that I really enjoyed.

I usually find Croshaw pretty level-headed about worldly stuff, but this book contains an outdated parody of an "SJW" called 'Nita, and it's very transparent what that might refer to. In short, it's one of the many "urban fantasy" stories in which it is discovered that magic is real, the twist this time being that people discover slime creatures and this time there's political correctness. No longer is it okay to insult the slime creatures or use the old name which becomes A Slur.

In all seriousness, the plot and characters were fine, and Croshaw's humour and way with words are on-point. Hence still giving it a high rating. But this one major point left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. It's trite, and it's not how these things work in reality.

For this one, I listened to the author's reading on Audible and was pleasantly surprised at Yahtzee's capabilities as a narrator. I laughed out loud several times, and I mostly followed the plot. The book has a pretty clear distaste for "political correctness," and I'm sure it would come across as cringey to anyone who lands on that side of things. On the whole, an entertaining read.

Loved everything else he has written, just this wasn't funny. A couple of smirks here and there but the belly laughs from the other books were just absent. Maybe if the book wasn't trying to shoehorn in some tired tropes about PC culture. Just seemed ham fisted. And every character was so 1 dimensional (which is actually quite ironic... Maybe he meant that... That would be smart indeed)
