I recall having run into a heated debate with a friend during the early stage of my current romantic relationship. Despite what that friend saw as the pinnacle of joy, recognition and empowerment, she could not understand my melancholy and pessimism. I had reacted to her saying that despite me loving my partner as much as I do, it does not mean life will be smooth-sailing and devoid of obstacles henceforth. This book helps me put across my point well. Many people have swerved severely to the ends of either classical (complete pragmatism) or romantic (utter idealism). A balance needs to be struck. Somehow nowadays people either somehow view relationships either as something completely functional, or something completely ethereal.
In line with this, I'd like to discuss about director Richard Linklater's Before trilogy.
I know many fans have raved about the first two movie, but opinion about the final installment are sorely divided, as they feel the beauty of Jesse and Celine's relationship has gone. However, this is where I praise Linklater for his courage to temper the classical with the romantic. In fact I had started on watching the trilogy with the final installment instead, then reverting back to watch to first two films.

Quick read...good for taking the pressure off of unrealistic expectations.
