This book was choppy, had random awkward product placement, and the character of Cricket was infuriating.

Exactly what I expected which was exactly what I wanted!

I have been a DeuxMoi disciple since I heard about the account a few years back. For those who don't know, its basically an Instagram account that posts celebrity gossip. The submissions can range from mundane to shocking to upsetting to silly but the submitted almost always ends there message with the salutation: Anon Pls. And thus is the genesis of a very fun, soapy "beach-read" that was this book.

The writing is splashy and breezy, making for a joyous, not-so-challenging reading experience. The opening chapters absolutely reminded me of The Devil Wears Prada which is high praise because that is a beloved movie of mine (and so many others).

Cricket, the main character, could have been more fleshed out. She is, as many others have commented a "self-insert." I feel like we are supposed to sorta picture ourselves when we picture Cricket. Her psychology, history and even appearance are rarely (maybe never?) mentioned. Which is to be expected in a book from an anonymous author.

My favorite aspect of the book was that it highlighted how real life can sometimes be stranger than fiction. There is a recent celebrity scandal that was reimagined in this book, masterfully. Reading the chapters were this scandal breaks had me thinking "if I didn't know the real-life scandal this was based on I would have thought the author lost her mind." But she did a great job of integrating aspects of this IRL bombshell into her similar fictionalized fiasco.

Not the most beautifully written or thought provoking piece of literature, but it’s fun and so addictive. Also, lowkey suspenseful and riveting. So good.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? No

Don’t know why but I was shocked at the sex scenes (three!) and pretty graphic! Just wasn’t expecting it for some reason, but I love Deuxmoi so this was really fun.
