Cole impresses upon the viewer a sense of hopeful desperation in 'Every Day Is For The Thief'.
I've never been to Nigeria, and I'm unsure how I felt about the country before I read this book.
That being said, Cole paints it as a hopeful city. A city in the throes of growth and change and yet neck deep in corruption.
By the end of the novel, most readers will feel exhausted by the constant presence of corruption in its various forms of bribes and deceptions.
This is a well written, deceptively simple novel about going back and finding that homes never really change even if the houses do.

I really wanted to like this more. It doesn't read like fiction at all. Maybe that shouldn't matter, but I was expecting a plot and was disappointed. The book is still informative and well written.
