This was simply fantastic! One of the best historicals I've read in a while! I've never read Sarah MacLean before so I figured I would start from the beginning and I am so happy I did.

I loved Callie in every way! She was so fun and determined. I also (obviously) adored Ralston (even though he continuously messed up over and over and over!!).

I would highly recommend this to all historical romance lovers!

If you've been reading historical romance books back to back, check this one out for a refreshing story.

We follow Calpurnia (aka Callie) who ends up a spinster after almost a decade of being out in society. One day she decides to start living her life by completing a list of things that ladies aren't supposed to do (e.g. kissing, gambling, attending a duel, etc).

The perfect person to help her fulfill the first item on the list (i.e. kissing) is Gabriel, the rakest of rakes, and off she goes to his house in the middle of the night. Coincidentally Gabriel requires her help to introduce his long-lost (Italian) sister to society. And the rest is history...

Their chemistry is off the charts, their banter is fun to witness and their attraction is smoking hot. Life quite literally bends over backwards to present Callie the opportunities to check off the items in her list too.

This was such a fun read. Brb, gotta check out the other books in the series.

I enjoyed this story. Gabriel and Callie are engaging and relatable characters. They kept my attention and they kept each other on their toes – fun to watch. One of my favourite tropes is the Wallflower and I love when she is smart and strong – which is Callie. At times the secondary characters added spice or moved the storyline along.

The hero and heroine work together and their romance is fun to watch. They find love and become friends along the way. This is a good start to the series, and I’m hoping to see more of these characters in the other books.

give me more refreshing heroines like Callie pls and thank you
Only complaint w this entire book is the ‘i don’t believe in love’ hero trope.

Quick and dirty review. I loved this book. I'm not a big fan of regency or these sorts of romance novels. I usually like more mystery in them honestly. But holy crap I was hooked from the minute I started reading this one. The heroine, Callie is a likable plain jane type but she really isn't that plain. Hero is your typical rake who just doesn't give a damn to be honest. Callie finds herself a spinster at age 28 and decides to complete a list of things that men normally can do but women can't such as gambling. Lets just say I read half the book in a day and finished up the last half in two days due to life stuff happening. I would have happily read the whole thing in one sitting though. Highly recommend folks check it out.

I wouldn't say I've read a lot of historical romance, or a lot of romance in general so my view has not been tainted by many, many readings of similar plot styles.

I will say though that this book makes me want to read more historical romance!

I enjoyed Callie's independence, boldness, and courage. She is a woman to be looked up to and admired. I enjoyed her witty comebacks (even if she didn't always mean what she said) and her sense of humor. She is a hopeless romantic and has plenty of time, as a spinster, to fantasize what the perfect romance would be like.

What to say about the leading Rake, but OMG! Gabriel St. John, Marque of Ralston is a notorious rake and is not ashamed to be so. He is never caught off guard nor put into situations that make him uncomfortable. That all changes after Callie appears, quite literally, on his doorstep. Also, he refuses to EVER fall in love.

I did not find the romance overbearing or too much (as I have found in other romance novels). It is amazing to me that the same plot formula can be used over and over again but still achieve great results. I wanted to follow Callie on her adventures and on her chance encounters with Ralston. I didn't want to put the book down.

I can't wait to read the next installment in the Love By Numbers series which features Gabriel St. John's twin brother, Nick.
