Seriously, how is the cat still alive?

A genuine tear-jerker, like the movie About Time and the book [b:The Midnight Library|52578297|The Midnight Library|Matt Haig|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602190253l/52578297._SY75_.jpg|74043794] smashed together. I'm the protagonist's same age and my father died last year, so this hit close to home. I can't even imagine what I'd do with a way to travel back in time to when I was a teenager to see him again. It's wish fulfillment. A chance to try a different life or answer the question, "What if?"

But I've read this story already. I've watched it in TV shows and movies. Straub spins an entertaining tale, but I couldn't pick up on anything new or interestingly done to make it stand out. There's the usual fable ending - be happy with your current life; it's usually the best - and the reality that no one can cheat death. Death comes for us all.

Except for the cat. Death never came for that cat. It will live forever.

I really enjoyed this book! What would you do if you had the chance to go back to what seemed to be an unremarkable day and change future events? On the night of Alice's birthday, she falls asleep and wakes up as her 16 year old self. Throughout the novel, she tries different courses to see how her life develops. She finally decides that she will no longer travel back and will face the events to follow. I thought it was very sweet , the relationship she had with her best friend and her dad. Reminded me of those days my 16 year old self had with my very dear friends. Like Alice and Sam, we are all still friends over 30 years later.

This book just totally captured me, spoke to me, resonated with me. I was already loving it before the time-travel element (something I enjoy a lot when done well), so once that element was brought in (and so successfully), it really started hitting all my buttons even more. The ending had me in tears.

I confess I do not remember any specifics of the book Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, but I remember how it made me feel--and this was the same exact feeling.

#qotd: would you rather travel backwards in time or forwards in time?

As a chronically indecisive person, I find this multiple life realities trope to be my worst nightmare. To have to choose which life I like the best? No thank you. However, it is continuously done phenomenally and I’m not mad about that. This book was wholesome and cute and not as depressing as I thought, but just the right amount to still keep me happy.
