First part of the book was good but then I just lost interest during the second half of the book. I lost the connection I had with the characters.

I really enjoyed this! It was a little darker than I had thought it would be for it's intended reader, but the concept was lovely and took me on a fantastic journey.

This book is amazing! It has everything I want in a good adventure story: enrapturing writing, unforgettable characters (hehe), and amazing and enchanting worlds. What is not to love about soaring through a magical stream on a pirate ship? This book is a great example of children's literature. Some stories in children's literature lack a certain amount of danger to make the story seem "believable" enough. This book had the right amount of danger but also a true sense of whimsy, and it balanced these two elements very well.
And the characters! Fin has got be one of my all time favorite characters. He is smart and clever and hilarious, but there is also a true vulnerability to him that is just as endearing. Marrill is fantastic too! She is undoubtedly brave. But, it is her compassion for others that really shines; her compassion is seen as one of the strongest elements of the book. Ardent, O Ardent! What's not to love? He goes right along with Dumbledore and Pim (the Emerald Atlas Series). Magical, caring, and quirky. I wish we got to learn more about Coll, because I feel like so little information was given about him, but he totally won me over in the end as well.
The fantastic illustrations have to be mentioned as well, not only do you get them at the beginning of each chapter, but occasionally there are full-sized prints.
All in all an amazing read. I would recommend it to anyone who has a thirst for adventure!

While I enjoyed the story and plot, some of the world-building and action were hard to follow.

Fascinating world, and lots of fun ideas. Depending on whether there are more books in the series depends on how much more I could like this. There are a lot more things to play with and a lot of interesting stories that I want to see more details of.
