The characters often repeat the idea that a woman cannot be a wizard, for reasons. Unfortunately for this idea, Esk is definitely a wizard. She has a staff and everything! Various people examine or at least change this idea throughout the book in various ways. 

The plot is a basic Hero's Quest, because women can have Hero's Quests, too. There are a few points where the reactions of the characters serve the plot more than the characters, but for the most part people behave plausibly. 

The setting is the star of the book, from the tiny isolated town of Bad Ass to the journey to the towns and the final destinations,
the Unseen University and the other place
. It's all varied and detailed enough to allow a clear interpretation. The structure Discworld overall is made clear, first through short exposition for context, then through the characters' interactions with the world.

Trying to get into the Discworld and I loved this book!  It was equal parts charming (funny and clever) and challenging (how the world works versus how it could/should work).  The characters are vibrant and distinct, the world building fantastic, the magic system hilarious...  I'm looking forward to making my way through the series.

I was expecting the story to focus on Esk’s time at Unseen University as a student, but it’s all about her journey to get there, and I enjoyed it a lot more for that. The horror elements were also a bit unexpected! 

“They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.

“If you ignore the rules people will, half the time, quietly rewrite them so that they don't apply to you.”

“They both savoured the strange warm glow of being much more ignorant than ordinary people, who were only ignorant of ordinary things.”

I wish it was longer. I love Granny but I wish her growth wasn't so last minute. I definitely ship all the ships. The humor is everywhere and it's great.
