If you’re a fan of the show you’ll enjoy this book. You can just hear the words coming from the characters perfectly. It’s written in their voice and is exactly what a Psych fan would want.

I love Psych I have loved the tv show ever since it first came out so when I found out there were books I was ecstatic. I did really enjoy the book but it did make me see Shawn in a different way that I'm not too happy about, maybe it's cause we see Shawn and his process through Gus's eye instead of Shawn's. Either way, I really enjoyed the book and can't wait to read the next.

This book was not terrible but not great. Rounded up from 2.5. My biggest two issues are that
1. Introduces some random misogyny where they dictate that it wasn't sad that Anna Nicole Smith overdosed, but that she posed in playboy. Also continually calling one of the female characters a hooker for what seems like no reason?
 2. The final solve is based on some random information pulled out of no where that was never hinted at the rest of the book. Half the fun of "whodunits" are trying to figure it out but if it is based in something never mentioned before, that's not possible.
Otherwise it was a pretty fun read. Good banter between the characters and the personalities from the show are clear for the characters.

I will say this, what makes the television series so good is the interactions between Shawn and Gus. In the books, their rapport was going to be critical for a successful translation from screen to words. Well, Rabkin nails the relationship. You can definitely tell that he is a writer for the show and the dialogue between the two of them is accurate and funny even in print form. I can visualize these two goofballs saying everything written down. However, the weak point in this one is the story (as I knew it would be going into it). Not that it was awful but it would have had to have been really good to keep my attention. Simply put, I didn't finish this novel because of its length. With where I'm at right now, I don't have four or five hours to invest in a book that does not have a lot of merit. My to-read list is getting bigger and bigger and there are more deserving books than Rabkin's that I should focus on. That being said, the parts of this book I read were funny and entertaining, but if I really need Shawn and Gus in my day, the television counterpart serves as an adequate and quicker fix.

Some of the characterizations seemed off -- Jules and Chief Vick especially suffered from the transition to ink, becoming flat and shrill. I did find the descriptions of the Bimbo of the Week entertaining, though. If one is in desperate need of a Psych fix (and away from the internet *cough*), this will do.

I LOVE Psych, so I knew I'd like the books. They are just as nutty, crazy and funny as the show. I look forward to more, while we wait for the show to return! :)
