The Tiger Came to the Mountains is a beautifully told story that captures the strength of a young girl, the unwavering love between siblings, and the power of perseverance in the face of unimaginable hardship. The narrative is both sad and lovely, pulling you in with its quiet intensity and keeping you captivated until the end.

What makes this story even more powerful is that it’s based on the real-life experiences of the author’s great-grandmother. While it’s a work of fiction, that connection to history adds an emotional depth that lingers long after finishing.

The story’s rich imagery and haunting atmosphere draw you into a world where survival is uncertain, and the bond between family is everything. It’s a touching reminder of how courage and resilience can thrive even in the darkest times. I thoroughly enjoyed this heartfelt and evocative read.

My favorite parts of this story were Moreno-Garcia's depictions of what life was like during the revolution in 1917. Raw. Haunting. They gave the story a palpable atmosphere and vivid backdrop, something she excels at creating in her longer fiction as well.

The interaction with the tiger was somehow a little disappointing. Just so...brief? I don't know. I was left wanting more at the end of the story and not in the "wait wait I'm not ready to be done with this please let me linger her a little longer" way but the "that's...it?" way.

Even still, it was a quick, enjoyable read. Worth spending the 20ish minutes on.
