I had given up on Karin Slaughter because of many reasons, but I had already bought several books in both this and the Grant County series. Then my spouse and I watched the first season of Will Trent, and I thought maybe I should at least give the Will Trent books a try. Coming from a very similar background, I connected with the TV Will Trent in a way that I normally don't with a police detective.  So, at first, I was honestly a bit disappointed that the book Will Trent was a lot different from the quirky, Latino TV one. However, this soon faded, and now I can't believe that that show came out of this gritty, but excellent (judging by the first book) series.

This book had multiple POV characters, but I can say that Slaughter handled each of their headspaces well. You grew to sympathise with those who were affected by the actions of the crimes committed in this story, and loathe the “baddies”, but in a way that was satisfying despite the obvious evil of the antagonists.

And I can't believe the series really ret conned some of the characters to the extent that they did. IYKYK.

📚💭Reminds me of Red Dragon or Postmortem.
🛍️ Loaned from HB.

This is my first Karin Slaughter book. I didn't really know what to expect, but knew that she is insanely popular and Will Trent recently came on ABC. Slaughter does something that many true crime writers try, but few are successful. Throughout the book, she allows countless threads to stray and yet in the final pages she still finds a way to wrap everything up neatly. It's very impressive.

Good opening book of a series.
jaw dropping when they reveal that the neighbor
Spoiler was only 15
I had to go back and re listen.
Toward the end it felt like it got gratuitously bloody and gave me the ick.

Again a very gruesome and horrific thriller which had me engrossed from the start till the end. All th3 surprises were sprung upon the reader in the first half of the book. There’s no big twist at the end but the path leading to the resolution had me captivated all book long. Like with Lena I did wonder how Will and Angie can do their jobs properly with everything going on in their lives, both in the past and the present. And again I wonder at how all the characters in Slaughter’s books have such troublesome lives. I also wonder how Slaughter would manage writing a thriller less gruesome but just as engrossing…
