Selected for March’s Creep It Real Book Club

This book was a thrilling ride from start to finish. Between driving in a snow storm and surviving creepy monsters, I was on the edge of my seat. I loved the spooks and scares.
I just wished the ending wasn’t so vague.

To quote Paul Rudd’s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall: “Do less.”
Addy has a near-death event on the road and after being shaken up, ends up following a friendly trucker on the next leg of her journey, complete with CB radios. Things then take a turn for the worse and all hell breaks loose.
The first half of this novella was wonderful. The inner monologue of Addy’s ex-husband was annoying, but I could let that slide as the set up for the story was great.
The second half unfortunately became what I call ‘kitchen sink writing’. It felt like we had a story that was very akin to the movie Descent and then It threw in way too much stuff that just watered down what was there.
There’s were too many elements introduced and considering its small page count, it got messy. It took a tense and isolated horror story and became some convoluted fever dream.
Being hit with no less than Mothman, creepy cannibals, sinister elusive dudes, undisclosed black market transports and disappearing trucks was just a headache. The ending also left you with a “you figure it out” stopping point.
It was good, but less is more.

A Must Read
Below features a relatable protagonist who survives a night of horrors. Some scenes made my skin crawl... in a good way. Pick this one up if you’re a horror fan.
