I don't remember much from this book other than really enjoying it when I read it back in elementary school. I thought the formatting was really interesting as it sort of broke the fourth wall which was mindblowing to my 9-year-old brain. I also remember really loving how dark the plot got, one of the first books I've ever read where blood and darker themes (closer to Grimm fairy tales) were explored. Definitely due for a reread

I loved the voice of this book, and a retelling of the really gruesome Grimm Fairy tales, perfect for a perpetual adolescent like me. It is a great read for middle school-aged students. An easy, enjoyable read.

🧠 My thoughts
If I were a kid, this would definitely be one of my favorite books of all time (but the gore might be too much by the way). It was humourous, captivating, and still kept the soul of the original story. I kept reading and couldn’t put the book down.

πŸ‘ What I like
  • Funny, captivating and intriguing
  • Easy to read

πŸ‘Ž What I don't like
  • The gore was a bit too much

An intriguing retelling of a wide selection of Grimm tales, all featuring Hansel and Gretel. I really enjoyed the echoes of the original tales, and while the gore isn't my thing anymore, I would have devoured this as a kid. Oddly fun.

Not my favorite thing overall. It uses a lot of writing style choices that I've never been a fan of, and that always bring me out of a story to facepalm.

But it's goofy and I can see the appeal for someone who doesn't hate those tropes. The ending was definitely fun.

Sometimes when you’re sick and just want to read all you can do is tear through your middle school collection.
