This is one of those books where the events you want to tell people about for them to judge whether they should read it themselves are the parts you should probably leave out should they want to read it themselves. Gah, oh well. What I thought was going to be the plot introduction ended up being the entire plot arc, but still enjoyed it all the way through. Dark, (gr|w)itty writing with an entertaining footnote gimmick that doesn't have time to get old, with style nods to old crime fiction. Hopefully Bazell finds time outside of the hospital to develop the stuff here in further novels.

A very mature take on the whole hero/anti-hero genre popularized by Lindsay's "Dexter". Page turning and exciting but definitely for adults.

This is definitely a unique book that is both exciting and action-packed as well as laugh out loud hilarious at times. However, it also toes the line with regard to profanity and occasionally gets a little too graphic. I liked the way that the story structure alternated between the past and the present, but I wasn't invested in the fate of the main character, and the ending was incredibly absurd and abrupt.

I didn't finish this. Started out kinda funny and interesting, but the deeper we got into the mob stuff and the gruesome details of that and the medical issues the main character now faced as a doctor, the grosser and ickier I felt. It was getting to where I had to force myself to pick it up to continue reading, so about halfway through I stopped.

clever and frenetic, and really liked the first 3/4 of the book. Then it got a bit too much, felt a bit thrown together, extreme just to be extreme. Too bad, such a great set up.

I really liked this book, the footnotes did not bother me.

This book was written for guys to read. It's a quick read but always felt disjointed and way too "dude" focused.
