This was a fun amalgam of a historical setting and a fantasy world. Scott's story is filled with high stakes and developed characters--particularly on the other side with Isabel's sidekicks like Buttons. The story in the "real" world is decidedly less developed. Most bothersome to me was Isabel's relationship with her mother. Basically every other female character in this comic is capable and vocal. Yet we barely see Isabel's mother. There is no explanation for her behavior with Isabel or her general absence. Even as Isabel endeavors to fix other parts of her life (like her relationship with her father), her mother remains aloof. That was a problem for me. Robinson's gorgeous artwork makes up for many shortcomings in characterization. The entire book is dynamic, fast paced, and engrossing. The final pages of the denouement are particularly breathtaking.

I'm not sure why I didn't love this more, I think I just found it kind of predictable. The art was absolutely incredible , the story was interesting, the worldbuilding was cool, and I liked the characters. It's a pretty easy read, give it a go.

CW: Absentee parents, War (not too intense), fantasy violence, minor blood

The artwork was stunning and I loved the main character. A good middle grade graphic novel.
