A great story inspired by the warring era of feudal Japan.

Much like in anime, you have to be willing to let a few things go when you read this book. But if you can get past the unlikelihood that (amongst other things) this kid would have leared all of these amazing skills so quickly, then this is a fairly interesting read. I especially liked Kaede's character - I can see her continuing to develop into an even more well-rounded character as this series progresses.

My one major complaint is in the narration. About half of the chapers are related in the first person from Takeo's perspective, which is great. But the rest of the chapers are narrated in the third person from Kaede's perspective with no real explanation given in the story for this shift in perspective and no explanation for how or why Takeo (who I can only assume is still narrating these chapters since no indication to the contrary was given) knows what's going on during these scenes. No narrative frame to make it work smoothly. Most readers probably won't be bothered by this as much as I was but, well, I took a class on narrative. I found the chapter transitions insufferable.

Nothing really happens until the last 50 pages but hey I quite like stories where it’s just description of the landscapes.
