Finally, an O'Neill play I can get on board with. The Hairy Ape is a commentary on class in America and brutally points out how divided we are as a nation. Unfortunately, a lot of what O'Neill was saying pre-Depression still holds true. His use of expressionism heightens the drama without hitting the audience over the head.

Read for my Masterpieces in Drama class.
This was not my cup of tea, to say the least. I gave it time to let the instructor walk me through the overall concept of the work, but I just can’t get past the casual racism and the extremely dark satire. It was just TOO dark for me and my current mental state. The anti-realism also through me a little off guard. I don’t think this is a read for me, but I see how important the subject matter is.

Frustrating script to read that probably works better on stage, but still feels very "of its time." An interesting exploration of the impact of outside pressures on our behavior and fate, but more a piece you appreciate than enjoy.

I was assigned to read this for a class in college. This was actually the only play I actually enjoyed.
