This book started so, so well. The premise was not exactly original – Canadian football player who asks his American ex-assistant to marry him so he can stay permanently in the US – but the way it was treated felt new to me. For starters, there’s nothing romantic about it. For him getting married is just the fastest way to obtain his green card, and she just happens to be his most convenient option. For her agreeing to this means that he will pay her massive student loans, so she can finally focus on her career as a graphic designer instead of accepting any job that comes her way so she can pay her debt. I really liked to see how she struggled between her morals (it’s a felony!) and the obvious awesomeness of the offer (debt free in two years instead of worrying about it for the next 20 years). The author also takes her time to develop the relationship. Yes, they knew each other before, but they don’t particularly like each other, not even when they start living together, and it’s only with time and effort and many arguments that they start to realise that the other might not be so bad after all. At this point my only complaint was – ironically - that the book was too focused on the two of them. Aiden has two friends that only show up for like five minutes at the end of the book, and Vanessa has a best friend whom she phones every once in a blue moon. Then there’s the matter of their (very) dysfunctional families, and there was a lot of potential in there, but nothing was really developed. But I still could say that I was very happy with this book. And then she realises she’s in love, and everything goes down, down, down. It was like I was reading a completely different book! Suddenly there was only relationship drama, endless tears, many – many – cheesy thoughts and scenes and even the characters didn’t feel like the same characters from 50 pages ago. I’m still giving it 2.5 stars because I really enjoyed about two thirds of the book, but the last third was just so disappointing :(

Writing style was difficult to read. MMC was flat. Literally last 2 chapters are like wth, not in twist kind of way but more of a what just happened.
