"Meh" is the feeling I have for this, the third book in the Caster Chronicles. I have many of the same feelings for the characters as I did in the last book, but at least Lena is MUCH more tolerable in her teenage angst (which makes Ethan that much more tolerable, too). This does not detract from the repetitive nothings (filler) that seem to take up most of the time between fairly interesting bouts of events. Those are the parts that I keep dragging myself through the mud--or lack thereof, in this instance--to read.

*SPOILER BELOW**SPOILER BELOW**SPOILER BELOW*
I do feel there is a bit too much convenience in Lena and Ethan's previous flings falling head over heels for each other. That felt too forced. In all honesty, I prefer seeing Ethan and Liv as well as Lena and John together. Other than the sexual tension undertone (ALWAYS wanting to touch each other but in "decent" YA form, having a barrier to stop them from going all the way) seems to be the only real attraction I feel/see/read between Lena and Ethan. Which makes the Liv/John relationship even more awkward. To me, there is more meaning in Ethan being attracted to a girl that not only is so much like the mother he adored and Marian, but also is highly relate-able to him, enjoys the library and reading like he does, as well as, by his own admission, lights the room up like sunshine whenever she's around. Those are the makings of a real relationship. Not just wanting to be "touchy-feely" all the time.

It says right on the back of the book that there wont be a happy ending. You’d think that would prepare me, but nooooooo. So I end up spending the last 30 or so pages crying my eyes out. Why do I do that to myself?

Book 3 of the Caster Chronicles begins shortly after Lena's seventeenth moon. Lena, unable to choose dark or light, claimed herself and now the town of Gaitlin, really the entire mortal and caster worlds, is paying the price. What's being called the "end of days" has everyone in Gaitlin, SC a little off. Lakes are drying up, there's oppressive heat, floods of insects, tornadoes and even earthquakes. All the while, Ethan is dreaming of rivers of blood and a fierce struggle and losing his taste for chocolate milk and Amma's cooking. The casters (Lena, Macon, etc.) and the mortals (Ethan, Marianne, Olivia, etc.) work together to try to solve the riddle of the eighteenth moon. Because if they don't it won't just be the end of days, but the beginning of something really horrible.

It's good writing; the southern aspects of this story just seep through the pages. It's a fun YA read, not as much angst in this series as in others. I'm impressed with how the characters have developed and grown as the series continued. My favorite thing about this series is the Sisters (Ethan's aunts). Their banter makes my day. ("You know that vegtablism is one step closer ta a world without panties an' preachers. That there is a documentated fact.")

But... 500+ pages? Do you really need that many pages of, "Well this is scary and completely out of the ordinary and probably means something huge, but I can't tell anyone else because they've got enough worries as it is." (Isn't that the line of thinking that got them nowhere in Books 1 & 2?) And Link. He became an incubus (one-quarter) in the last book; he comes through for his friends time and again; but still, so little of the book goes into his change.

My biggest complaint is that nothing really happens in the book until 400 pages into it. And then, just when the characters are FINALLY figuring out the mystery and taking action, it ends.

A cliffhanger! Irritating!

This book was romantic, creative and suspenseful. It was just as exciting as the others and I couldn't stop reading it.

[3.5 Stars] I powered through this book in one sitting, and though I enjoyed the first two books more than the third, this one was still an enjoyable read. I'd give it more like 3.5 stars. I feel like there were quite a lot of loose ends and this book also moved faster than the other which I thought was to its detriment. There were some things that were slightly confusing and didn't line up well, but still I'm curious to know how the fourth book ends now and the entire series in general!

-These books are still way too long and I feel like they should’ve seriously been edited down
-Side characters are more compelling than the two main characters
-Can be confusing
-Still enjoyable/addicting so I can’t complain too much

As the Wayward who thought he is just a mere Mortal, Ethan did sacrifice himself for the people who loved. I am so invested with his family's history and the Caster world revolving it. On to some more, gotta start the last book tho.

This is a 4 ⭐ for me. 👏🏻
