Some takeaways:

The gender binary is a “party guest who shows up before you get the chance to set table,“ and it’s enforced via power and control: “Power can be defined as the ability to make a particular perspective seem universal. Control is how power maintains itself.”

As we move beyond the binary and into a more expansive understanding of all the identities we hold, we’ll need to...

...update our language: “This is actually the purpose of language: To give meaning to concept as they evolve.”

...move from tolerance to acceptance: “Tolerance is not the same thing as acceptance. Tolerance is always about maintaining distance.” &: “In our fear, we treat other people’s identities as if they are something they are doing to us, and not something that just exists.”

...and much more, as Alok so beautifully articulates in their work (not only in this book but in their poetry).

Beyond the Gender Binary gives a brief introduction into the ideas of being non-binary & breaking gender norms. Alok uses it to voice their journey from childhood to adulthood as someone who wants to break free from gender norms

It works as a good introduction for educational purposes for those who know don’t know much about nonbinary identities and want to learn. It details many of the misconceptions people have about gender nonconformity in an informative & concise way. However, if you already know a bit about these topics, you may not learn much as it doesn’t go into lots of detail

I’d recommend this book for people who want a starting point to learn

“This is not about erasing men and women but rather acknowledging that man and woman are two of many stars in a constellation that do not compete but amplify one another’s shine.”
