This book reminded me of an adult take of Rick Riordan’s novels. It’s almost like American folklore, except the book describes the beliefs brought from immigrants and how they might change over time. I really enjoyed this book for the unique worldbuilding and the interesting plot twist near the end. It was helpful to read the Norse mythology book by Neil Gaiman right before. My only critique would be I’m not sure I understand why Shadow is the protagonist, or really, who he is as a person. He remains mostly a mystery, but maybe that’s because I listened to the audiobook.

Good not great? I think, perhaps, that some of the soul of the Upper Midwest didn't make it to the page. And I never felt transported--I always felt as if I was reading a book. So there's your review. Not great, but good.

With all the of the gods-and-their-offspring-run-amok books (and their follow-up movies)currently out there, this one reminds us that this type of story can be done well.
