A short and sweet little spy / murder mystery, which is a good fit for the 9-12 category. Our heroes are all in the area of 11, and very determined to make their mark on the world.

There are a few novel elements compared to the average story of this type, such as the bad start between Nuala and May, and their difficulties coming together to solve the mysteries. May's brash character against Eric's quiet, shy wisdom, against Nuala's creativity and bravery. And a few poignant thoughts every now and again about the lay of the world.

It was nice, though not supremely memorable, but that may also have something or other to do with the fact that I don't generally care for stories about WW 1 or WW2.

Robin Stevens' books are like Agatha Christie for younger readers and let me tell you, I eat it up. I don't think the pace of this new series was perfectly set -- i.e., I found it oddly slow for the amount of action happening in the plot -- but it was nevertheless joyous to spend a few evenings in the company of May, Eric, and Nuala. Fun fun.
