I mostly enjoyed this book. It's Dark, Funny, Darkly Funny, and at times quite explicitly Gory. The mystery is good, and remained mostly unclear until the reveal.

The character however, where to begin: Sidney Grice . Overbearing, tedious, and occasionally downright vile. A parody (or spoof) of the classic Victorian detective. March Middleton . Trusting, naive, but bold, and clearly carries significant baggage.

Let us hope, they balance each other out in the forthcoming books.

It was interesting. Rather Sherlocky and implies Grice was the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes, towards the end. Cheeky. Would certainly pick up another in the series. Grice is imminently unlikeable at many times.

This was a nice detective story set in Victorian England.
The mystery was not that gripping or impressive, but what I liked more about the novel was the narrator. The novel is narrated by the main female character March Middleton, who gets to live with her Guardian who is a personal detective. And because she is a clever and witty person she goes and assists him on a case.
In her narration she frequently addresses the topic of how females are regarded by men of that time and she always has a response for the silly things the policemen say.
The disappointing thing about this was only that in the end she was not the one to get everything right, she missed clues, and was rather gullible which made her feminist statements and character fade away a little at the end.
Nevertheless it was nicely done and the audiobook was well narrated.

Sydney Grice is a pompous *ss with no redeeming features. He is utterly unlikeable. And I was annoyed that he is constantly called by his full name.
