[b:Best Laid Plans|56311725|Best Laid Plans (Garnet Run, #2)|Roan Parrish|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1608139600l/56311725._SX50_.jpg|85995644] is the second book in the Garnet Run series by [a:Roan Parrish|14070842|Roan Parrish|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1592486118p2/14070842.jpg]. It was super sweet and full of kitties, but kinda light on the plausibility. This author normally writes characters that are complex and intricate, but feel authentic and real. This time around the MCs don't really live up to that standard. Rye’s character felt almost incomplete, like we were missing a lot of info and only really got surface level insight, even when it was his POV. I also had a hard time understanding Charlie’s actions and decisions. While admirable in theory, he does things in the name of other’s safety and happiness that are frankly ridiculous and also irresponsibly risky. He also seemed to be repressing way more than is healthy and it is not surprising that he has overwhelming sexual hang-ups to show for it. Character flaws aside, it was still a nice story. It got a little bit boring and dragged a touch too long, but was still pretty decent. All the cats certainly helped with the mushy feelings. So not a hit for me, but I would still definitely read future titles by this author.

3.5 stars. This was a sweet, charming romance. There's not much conflict or angst but I still found it enjoyable.

And a bit three chapters from the close.  A man impulsively arrives at a dangerously ramshackle house that he decides to repair via YT videos while having no DIY experience, and then doesn’t ask the hardware store owner for ANY help.  Just to set up a grumpy -sunshine dynamic, looks like.  Bah, couldn’t continue.  There are probably other complexities but don’t care.

I loved this book. I'm a big fan of romances in which lonely people find love and community, and this book gave me that.

Ry hasn't had an easy life and never had anywhere he could really call home. When he inherits a house from a grandfather he never knew he had, he's already homeless and couch surfing, and decides to move to the middle of nowhere. Unfortunely for him, the house is a disaster and not fit for habitation. So he makes his way to the hardware store where he meets Charlie, the brother of one of the protagonists from the book before this one (though they can easily be read as standalones). Charlie is lonely, has a hero-complex, and has been so focused on just surviving and fulfilling other people's needs over his own since his parents died when he was 18, in that he now has no idea what he himself even wants or likes. Ry teaches him how to want things for himself.

I really liked the dynamic between the characters, and the cats!! So many cats!!

This was the perfect beach read for a summer holiday, until I realized it was mostly about their  cats. I'm not a cat person, well not the extent that the characters were...  😼

Bless Rye Janssen for calling Jack out for being ungrateful to the cinnamon roll that is Charlie Matheson. That was my biggest complaint of the first book that he didn't treat Charlie with much respect at all.

I was satisfied with how this story went. I assumed Charlie and Rye would end up living in the house so I was pleased with what he ended up doing with the property. I was happy to see him with stability for the first time in his life.
