Beautiful prose. A cult classic for a reason. I just can't get on with slow paced books.

what a cleverly constructed novel and so before its time. This author’s bravery is something I’m incredibly impressed by. She uses the vampire trope to explore identity, sexuality and climate change among a host of other issues. This was a slow and introspective read and I appreciated it so much. 3.75 stars.

I know it's been said, but I can't get over the fact that this was originally published in 1991. Jewelle Gomez was a visionary with this book. Gilda begins an unnamed freedom seeker turned vampire in 1850, and ends the story in dystopian 2050. She maintains her curiosity and hope for life, despite experiencing the cruelty and thoughtlessness of humans first hand.
I can't recommend the audible version. The chapters aren't lined up, then the prologue is at the end. I'll read this again in a visual format.
