Mallory always seems to be close to murders when they happen and she’s great at figuring out the identity of the killer, but of course the cops don’t trust her one bit. When a murder happens at a party, and her friend - a suspect, but innocent - is abducted by aliens, Mallory follows him to the sentient alien space station where he’s found sanctuary. Mallory also takes sanctuary there, a place almost free of humans so she doesn’t have to worry about inadvertently causing murders.

This is a complex tale with a lot of characters, both human and otherwise. Mallory is the main character but the story is also told from others’ point of view. We get backstory, intentions, and a different way of seeing what’s going on.

Mallory, her friend Xan, and his semi-psychotic friend Calliope are all very likable, but we’re also introduced to likable members of the Gneiss race, all rocky characters who communicate with vibrations and who are capable of movement - slow movement but movement nonetheless. I’m looking forward to the next in the trilogy and hope to encounter more of the same people.

I liked the complexity of the aliens and Eternity, and I liked Calliope, but that was about it. The book kept tacking on new POV characters to reveal new info whenever it was needed, so solving the mystery felt less like solving and more like an extended sequence of “gotcha”s. The dialogue was just bad. Overall a big letdown with such a cool premise.

I really enjoyed this book.  The characters and the setting were both very interesting, the aliens were actually very alien.

I really hope there are more books in this series
though I wonder how it will work if the station is running at normal capacity since it seems like maybe the station would know immediately who the murderer is.  Though the second epilogue suggests not, but not why the station wouldn't know since she was able to piece things together after she had a compatible host.

It's like this book was custom-designed for my weirdo brain. I loved it and can't wait to read the sequel(s)!
