Having finished an advanced reader copy of Golden Boy, I was impressed with this first effort. Immensely readable, almost compulsively so,if the first twenty or so pages don't put you off, this story will grab you. I liked the chapters being told by the different characters so that their connections and reactions to Max's story gave it more emotional depth. How this family and its friends cope with Max's coming of age (or coming of self) makes for very thought provoking reading. My only criticism is that several of the plot twists were very predictable, but in the end not ruinous.

I was happy, sad and angry while reading this book. Some parts (mostly Daniel’s) really made me laugh out loud and some parts (mostly Karen’s and Hunter’s) made me so angry I had to scream into my pillow.
I had to take a break while reading the rape part because it was too much for me but I later picked it up again because I wanted to know what would happen next.
Karen made me angry so many times.
Steve is such a daddy, it had to be said.
I liked how I got to learn about intersexuality. I liked how the book was written from different perspectives.
Would recommend!

This book made me feel feelings I didn’t even know I had. It was heartbreaking, at times I even felt physically ill when I read it, and felt my heart beat out of my chest. It made me so sad, and angry.
It was an incredible read, it did take a lot out of me, and took a long time to read (simply cause I had to take frequent breaks) but very worth it.
It was very educational and it gave me a lot to think about.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, but only if you’re mentally prepared.

Trigger warning: There is a graphic rape scene within the first twenty pages and rape continued to be (among others) a central theme in this book.
