Bone is light and fun, with a few dark undertones. The artwork is great, with different characters drawn in fairly diverse ways. Overall, it's a quick, enjoyable read.

Reread: straight up did not remember Thorn looking like that. Every other character design seems much stronger

I will die by this statement but the “Bone” series is my favourite book series. The art work, the intricate plot, the humour, the characters. If I had to read one series for the rest of my life it would be this

I'm reading this because Neil Gaiman speaks so highly of it and my youngest son has been asking me to for years. After this first installment, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. It's cute, the illustrations are charming and there is obviously going to be adventure, but not much else.
Perhaps this was just the set up. The introduction to our players, etc. but if I had been buying this as a serial I would have wanted a bigger bang for my buck!
I'll keep reading because we own them all, but this first part wasn't enough if I had to go out and buy more to continue.

I wasn't too intrigued by the premise... bone-like creatures lost in an unknown land, but Jeff Smith has created an entertaining cast of characters in a world with all kinds of strange creatures (hairy rat monsters, cow races, talking bugs, etc).
This would be an easy sell to a reluctant reader since the pictures are bright and cartoonish with clean lines and the story is quick-paced.

A re-read that was just as enjoyable as I remember. Maybe more so, since it wasn't in color when I first read it.
