This is a procedural for readers who like a LOT of detail in their stories. MEs give multiple names for street drugs along with the chemical components, characters tell what route they take to arrive at a scene, inclusive of street names, and there's enough back story of supporting characters that they become main characters during their moment in the sun. But Valen is consistent in providing detail, so while it may seem too much in the beginning of the book, the reader discovers that this is how Det. Santana thinks; it's not simply a writing style. Once you're over that hurdle, it's a very enjoyable read about what seems to be a rather routine urban melting pot gang banger murder and turns out to be something much, much bigger.
